Frequently Used Band Terminology

  • BOA – Bands of America
  • BPO – Band Parent Organization
  • BPO Board – a volunteer group of parents voted (by parents) into positions to organize fundraising, organize parent volunteers, and generally support the band.
  • Band Yard – outside location on the north side of DRHS where props are built and stored.
  • Battery – the marching drum section comprised of snare drums, bass drums, and quads.
  • Bibbers – uniform pants that look like overalls.
  • Brass – brass instruments: trumpet, mellophone, baritone, sousaphone.
  • Chair(s) – Parent volunteers that are the organizer Point Person for an event or project.
  • Cut Time – an online data management program the band uses to communicate student accounts, calendars, parent volunteers and send out messages.
  • DMI – Damonte Marching Invitational is the marching band show DRHS host
  • Drum Major – Student conductors in marching band.
  • Fair Share – The fees for band. We add up the entire budget & divide by # of students for the final price.
  • Guard – the colorguard is the section of marching band  that spins flags, throws rifles & manages props.
  • Marimba – a percussion instrument with wooden bars played in the pit. It’s rather large.
  • NCBA – Northern California Band Directors Association
  • Pit – the front ensemble of kids that play, but don’t march. They have a lot of large equipment to move! Also known as the Front Ensemble.
  • Podium – raised stands the drum majors or director stands on while conducting.
  • Rack – a stand with a variety of instruments played in the pit.
  • Section Leader – The student-leader of your child’s section to help problem solve and encourage the section.
  • SNBS – Sierra Nevada Band Series, the primary circuit the DRHS Marching Band competes in.
  • Team(s) – groups of parents that work together on an event or project.
  • Vibraphone – or “vibes” is a percussion instrument with aluminum bars played in the pit.
  • WBA – Western Band Association
  • Woodwinds – wind instruments: flute, piccolo, clarinet, saxophone
